Medicare ANOC 2027: 5 Changes You Should Review

October 09, 2026•5 min read

Every fall, Medicare beneficiaries receive important information about their health insurance coverage for the upcoming year. One of the most important documents is the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC).

If you have a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, this notice explains what may be changing in your coverage for 2027.

But with so many details to review, it's easy to overlook information that could affect your healthcare and budget.

At Empowered Retirement Health Options, we believe understanding your Medicare coverage shouldn't feel overwhelming. That's why we're breaking down what your ANOC letter means, what to look for, and how to prepare for the year ahead.

What Is a Medicare Annual Notice of Change (ANOC)?

The Annual Notice of Change is a document sent each year to members of Medicare Advantage and standalone Part D prescription drug plans.

It explains important changes to your plan's coverage and costs for the upcoming year.

Your ANOC may include updates to:

  • Monthly Costs and deductibles

  • Doctor and specialist copayments

  • Prescription drug coverage and costs

  • Other plan rules and coverage requirements

Even if you're happy with your current Medicare plan, taking time to review these changes can help you make more informed decisions.

Four Things to Check in Your 2027 ANOC Letter

1. Changes to Your Monthly Premiums and Out-of-Pocket Costs

One of the first things to review is whether your monthly plan cost will change in 2027.

However, costs are only one part of your healthcare expenses.

Your plan may also change its deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, or maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered medical services.

For example, even if your monthly premium stays the same, your cost for a specialist appointment or hospital visit could increase.

What to do: Compare your current costs with those listed for 2027. Consider how frequently you use healthcare services and how potential changes might affect your budget.

2. Prescription Drug Coverage

If you take prescription medications regularly, this section deserves special attention.

Medicare prescription drug plans may update their formularies, which are the lists of medications they cover.

A medication you currently take could be placed in a different cost-sharing tier or become subject to additional coverage requirements.

Your preferred pharmacy's network status or cost-sharing arrangement may also change.

What to do: Make a list of your current prescriptions, including medication names and dosages. Review your plan's 2027 formulary and pharmacy directory to confirm coverage and estimated costs.

3. Your Doctors and Healthcare Providers

For many Medicare beneficiaries in Orange County, keeping access to trusted healthcare providers is an important priority.

If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, your access to certain doctors, specialists, and hospitals may depend on your plan's network.

Provider participation can change over time, which is why it's important to verify your coverage before the new year.

Your ANOC may not list every doctor or hospital affected by network changes.

What to do: Check your plan's updated provider directory and contact your doctor's office to confirm participation in your specific Medicare Advantage plan for 2027.

4. Changes to Coverage Rules

Understanding how your Medicare plan works can be just as important as understanding what it costs.

Certain Medicare Advantage plans have rules involving specialist referrals, prior authorization, and provider networks.

These requirements may change for the upcoming year.

What to do: Review the coverage changes described in your ANOC and consult your plan's Evidence of Coverage for more detailed information.

What's the Difference Between an ANOC and an Evidence of Coverage?

While both documents provide important information, they serve different purposes.

Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) highlights what's changing in your plan for the upcoming year.

Your Evidence of Coverage (EOC) provides a more detailed explanation of your plan's covered services, costs, and requirements.

Think of the ANOC as your summary of changes and the EOC as your comprehensive plan guide.

Reviewing both can help you better understand your coverage.

What Happens If You Don't Make Changes?

If your current Medicare Advantage or Part D plan continues to be offered and you take no action during Annual Enrollment, you'll generally remain enrolled in that plan for 2027.

However, your plan's updated benefits, costs, and coverage rules may still take effect on January 1.

This means that keeping the same plan doesn't necessarily mean keeping the same coverage details.

If your plan is being discontinued, you'll receive information about the change and any available enrollment options.

Important Medicare Enrollment Dates for 2027

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period takes place from October 15 through December 7, 2026.

During this period, eligible beneficiaries can make certain changes to their Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage for the following year.

Changes made during this enrollment period generally become effective on January 1, 2027.

Reviewing your ANOC before the December 7 deadline gives you an opportunity to evaluate your current coverage and determine whether you want to explore other available options.
